We will be sure to provide you with the relevant workbooks and competency proformas to be observed and signed off within the workplace according to your local policy.

What equipment will you use for training?

We have a variety of different training equipment and tools available. The training will be relevant and transferable. However, if you have a specific requirement for a particular type of equipment, please make this clear during the booking process, and the team will ensure this is provided. Alternatively, we can use your own equipment for training.

The Importance of Basic Life Support (BLS) Training

BLS training equips individuals with the skills to respond effectively to cardiac arrest, choking, or respiratory emergencies. It builds confidence, reduces hesitation, and enables timely action before emergency services arrive. For healthcare professionals, it ensures patient safety, supports regulatory compliance, and enhances teamwork in critical situations.

BLS also helps reduce the risk of brain damage by maintaining oxygen flow during cardiac arrest.

Widespread training in workplaces and public spaces increases the chances of someone being able to act in an emergency, ultimately creating safer communities.

Aspects of the Basic Life Support Course

CPR

CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is a very important part of BLS training courses. In this part, we will teach you how to perform CPR for adults, children, and babies. First, we will show you where to place your hands on the chest, how deep to press, and how fast to carry out compressions.

For adults and children, we place our hands on the centre of the chest, while for babies, we use two fingers just below the nipple line.

We will also explain how to place someone in the recovery position, which helps keep their airway clear. This position helps protect them until help arrives. You will also learn how to call emergency services quickly and understand how doing CPR properly can help save lives.

AED

An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is a device that helps save lives by treating people with serious heart problems. In BLS practical training, we will teach you how to know when to use an AED and how to use it properly.

You will learn how to place the pads on the chest of both adults and children and how to follow the AED’s instructions. We will also teach you how to continue CPR between shocks, which helps improve the chance of survival. Knowing how to use an AED and giving CPR quickly is very important for saving lives.

Basic First Aid

The First Aid part of BLS hands-on training teaches you life-saving skills for different emergencies. You will learn how to assess serious injuries and provide the correct help.

We will cover how to treat wounds, use bandages, and manage broken bones. You will also learn how to help someone who is choking or having an allergic reaction and how to use an epinephrine injector in case of a serious allergic reaction. First Aid skills help you know what to do in emergencies and can save lives. You can move on to complete our level 3 emergency first aid training.

Choking

Choking is a serious emergency where someone’s airway becomes blocked, and they can’t breathe properly. In this part of the practical BLS training, we will teach you how to recognise the signs of choking, such as coughing, gasping, or unable to speak.

You will learn how to perform the Heimlich manoeuvre (abdominal thrusts) for adults and children to clear the blockage. For infants, we will show you how to give gentle back blows and chest thrusts.

You will also learn how to stay calm and encourage the person to cough if they can. Knowing these steps can help you act quickly and safely in a choking emergency.

Basic Life Support Training FAQs

1. What is BLS Certification?

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification confirms that an individual has been trained to respond to life-threatening emergencies, including cardiac arrest and choking. It involves learning CPR, AED use, and emergency assessment.

Certification is often required for healthcare professionals and is valid for one to two years, depending on the provider.

2. Which Courses Pair Well with Basic Life Support?

The training pairs well with courses like Manual Handling, First Aid at Work, Anaphylaxis Awareness, and Safeguarding.

These courses complement BLS by broadening emergency response skills, improving patient safety, and meeting workplace compliance. Together, they prepare staff to handle a wider range of incidents confidently and professionally.

3. When Should The Course Be Refreshed?

BLS training should be refreshed every 12 months, in line with Resuscitation Council UK and CQC recommendations. Regular updates help prevent skill fade, ensure continued competence, and maintain confidence in emergency response.

In high-risk environments or healthcare settings, more frequent refreshers—every 6 months—may be advised to ensure staff remain fully prepared. Please note that the certificate is still valid for two years. Refreshers to keep skill sharp.

4. Is the BLS Course Mandatory?

Yes, Basic Life Support (BLS) training is mandatory for all patient-facing healthcare professionals in the UK, including nurses, doctors, and healthcare assistants. It is a core requirement under the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and Skills for Health frameworks. Annual refresher training is typically required to maintain compliance and ensure safe, effective emergency response.

It ensures staff can respond effectively to life-threatening emergencies and is required to meet standards set by the CQC, Resuscitation Council UK, and professional bodies like the GMC and NMC.

Regular training with practical supports patient safety, regulatory compliance, and professional competence in high-risk environments.

5. Does Caring for Care’s BLS Training Include Both Theory and Practical Components?

Yes, Caring for Care’s BLS training includes both theoretical and practical elements. The course combines classroom instruction with hands-on assessments, teaching essential life-saving techniques such as CPR, the recovery position, choking response, and emergency assessment.

This blended approach ensures participants gain the knowledge and practical skills needed to respond confidently in real-life emergencies.

6. Why Choose Caring for Care for BLS Training?

Caring for Care offers high-quality, face-to-face BLS training that combines expert-led theory with hands-on practical sessions. Courses are aligned with Resuscitation Council UK and CQC standards to ensure full compliance.

With flexible delivery options, experienced trainers, and consistently excellent feedback, Caring for Care is a trusted choice for healthcare professionals and organisations seeking effective life support training.

Backed by over 9,500 positive reviews and more than 20,000 nurses and carers trained annually across mandatory and clinical courses, Caring for Care continues to set the standard for reliable, evidence-based training.

7. What Happens If the BLS Certificate Is Not Renewed?

If a BLS certificate is not renewed, individuals may no longer be considered competent to respond to emergencies, putting patient safety at risk.

For healthcare professionals, this can result in non-compliance with CQC and Resuscitation Council UK standards, potentially affecting job roles, regulatory inspections, and overall service quality.

Failure to renew certification may also lead to disciplinary action, job loss, or fines for healthcare providers and organisations.

8. What does a practical Basic Life Support (BLS) session involve?

A practical Basic Life Support (BLS) session typically covers CPR techniques for adults, children, and infants, use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), managing choking incidents, and assessing breathing and circulation. It emphasises hands-on practice to build confidence and competence in emergency response.

If you would like our trainers to focus specifically on child or infant resuscitation, please indicate this when booking so that the necessary tools and materials can be prepared in advance to make the training fully bespoke.

9. How long is the training?

At Caring for Care, our Basic Life Support (BLS) courses typically last around 3 hours. This allows time for adequate hands-on practice for all participants, interactive Q&A sessions, and various classroom demonstrations.

Each learner is expected to participate actively and complete a practical assessment to demonstrate competence and build confidence in emergency response. What sets our classroom apart is the high ratio of equipment per learner and our small class sizes—ensuring personalised attention and an optimal learning experience.

10. Does Caring for Care provide in-house life support training?

Yes, Caring for Care provides in-house Basic Life Support (BLS) training.

We work with over a thousand organisations each year and are proud to hold more than 9,500 five-star reviews. The course follows Resuscitation Council UK guidelines and includes hands-on CPR for adults, children, and infants, AED use, choking management, and emergency response procedures.
