Course Benefits

  • Clarity on a complex process: Many nurses find the revalidation requirements confusing to navigate. This course breaks everything down clearly — what is required, how to evidence it, and how to stay organised throughout the three-year cycle.
  • Confidence before your revalidation date: Understanding exactly what is needed means you can prepare steadily rather than rushing at the last minute.
  • CPD hours towards revalidation: Attending this course counts towards your CPD hours for NMC revalidation, contributing to the participatory CPD requirement.
  • Reflective practice skills: Reflective accounts are one of the areas nurses most commonly find challenging. This course builds your confidence in reflective writing and its application to the NMC Code.
  • Support for managers and team leads: Healthcare managers and clinical leads who support colleagues through revalidation will gain a clearer understanding of their role and responsibilities in the process.
  • Delivered by practising healthcare professionals: Our trainers are nurses and doctors with real revalidation experience — not generalist instructors. They bring practical, first-hand context to every part of the course.
Reduces professional isolation: Structured revalidation training creates space for professional discussion, peer learning, and shared reflection — one of the core benefits the NMC designed revalidation to encourage.

Who Should Attend NMC Revalidation Awareness Training

This course is for all registered nurses, midwives, and nursing associates who need to revalidate with the NMC every three years. It is suitable for:

  • Registered nurses approaching their first revalidation.
  • Experienced nurses refreshing their knowledge ahead of their next revalidation cycle.
  • Midwives and nursing associates at any stage of their revalidation journey.
  • Healthcare managers and clinical leads supporting their teams through the revalidation process.
  • Practice educators and clinical supervisors with a role in their colleagues’ revalidation.

If you are on the NMC register, revalidation is not optional — and understanding the process clearly makes completing it significantly less stressful.

What Is NMC Revalidation?

NMC revalidation is the process all registered nurses, midwives, and nursing associates in the UK must complete every three years to renew their NMC registration and demonstrate they remain fit to practise. It was introduced by the Nursing and Midwifery Council in April 2016.

The purpose of revalidation is not to test fitness to practise in isolation — it is to encourage ongoing reflection, professional development, and consistent engagement with the NMC Code as part of everyday nursing and midwifery practice. Revalidation reinforces professional standards, strengthens public confidence in nursing, and reduces professional isolation by encouraging peer engagement and discussion.

Applications are submitted online through MyNMC, which opens 60 days before your revalidation date.

Note: The NMC has announced plans to modernise the Code and review revalidation requirements, with consultations planned for 2026 and updated requirements expected from October 2027. Current requirements remain fully in place until then.

Importance of NMC Revalidation Training

Revalidation is a professional and regulatory requirement, but navigating it without clear guidance can lead to anxiety, incomplete portfolios, and — in the worst case — a lapsed registration.
NMC Revalidation Awareness Training addresses this directly.

It ensures every delegate leaves with a solid understanding of:

  • What the NMC revalidation process involves and what is required of them.
  • How to identify, gather, and present the components of a complete revalidation portfolio.
  • How the NMC Code applies to their practice and how to reflect on it meaningfully.
  • Why CPD, feedback, and peer review matter beyond compliance — and how to approach them well.
  • The documentation and record-keeping habits that make the three-year cycle manageable.

For organisations, ensuring your registered staff attend revalidation awareness training also reduces the risk of registration lapses within your team — protecting both your workforce and the patients in your care.

NMC Revalidation Course FAQs

1. What is NMC Revalidation Awareness Training?

NMC Revalidation Awareness Training is a course that helps registered nurses, midwives, and nursing associates understand the full NMC revalidation process.

It covers the revalidation requirements, portfolio components, the NMC Code, reflective practice, CPD, feedback, and record-keeping — giving delegates the knowledge and confidence to complete their revalidation successfully.

2. Is NMC revalidation training mandatory?

NMC revalidation itself is mandatory for all registered nurses, midwives, and nursing associates in the UK.

Revalidation awareness training is not a regulatory requirement, but it is strongly recommended for anyone who wants to understand the process clearly, build their portfolio correctly, and approach their revalidation date with confidence.

Attending this course also contributes towards your required CPD hours.

3. What does the NMC revalidation portfolio need to include?

The revalidation portfolio must include evidence demonstrating you have met all NMC requirements for the three-year period.

This course covers the full list of required components and explains how to identify, organise, and present your evidence to NMC standards.

4. Does attending this training count towards my CPD hours?

Yes. Attending NMC Revalidation Awareness Training counts as participatory CPD towards your required CPD hours for NMC revalidation.

You should record it in your revalidation portfolio as a CPD activity, noting the date, duration, and how it links to the NMC Code.

5. What is reflective practice and why does it matter for revalidation?

Reflective practice is the process of actively thinking about your experiences in practice — what happened, what it meant, and how it informs your future work.

It is a core requirement of NMC revalidation because it demonstrates ongoing engagement with the NMC Code and a commitment to safe, person-centred care.

This course defines reflective practice and explains how to build it into your everyday working life.

6. What types of CPD activities count towards NMC revalidation?

A wide range of CPD activities count towards NMC revalidation, including face-to-face training courses, e-learning, conferences, peer discussions, clinical supervision, reading, and online learning.

This course lists examples of qualifying CPD activities and explains how to document them accurately in your revalidation portfolio.

7. How often should I attend NMC Revalidation Awareness Training?

It is most beneficial to attend in the year before your revalidation date — particularly for your first revalidation, or if you have not yet built consistent revalidation habits.

Many nurses also attend at the start of each new three-year cycle to reset their approach to CPD logging, feedback collection, and reflective practice from the beginning.

8. Is NMC Revalidation Awareness Training available online?

This training is delivered onsite at your premises for groups of up to 12 delegates. We travel to your workplace anywhere in the UK, making it convenient for your whole team to attend without the disruption or cost of travel.

To arrange a session for your team, get in touch and we will confirm availability and a date that works for you.

9. Who should attend NMC revalidation training — nurses only, or managers too?

Both nurses and managers benefit from attending. Registered nurses, midwives, and nursing associates gain a clear understanding of what they personally need to do to revalidate.

Healthcare managers and clinical leads gain a clearer understanding of their role in supporting their team through the process, including their responsibilities around feedback, CPD, and documentation.

10. Are there any upcoming changes to NMC revalidation requirements?

Yes. The NMC has announced plans to modernise the Code and review revalidation requirements, with consultations planned for 2026 and updated requirements expected from October 2027.

Current requirements remain fully in place until then. We keep our course content updated in line with the latest NMC guidance, so all training delivered by Caring for Care is current and accurate at the time of delivery.

11. What is the mandatory training for NMC revalidation?

There is no single mandatory training course required for NMC revalidation. However, you must complete 35 hours of CPD over your three-year cycle, of which at least 20 hours must be participatory. The content of your CPD is your choice, provided it is relevant to your practice.

12. Can any nurse do my revalidation?

No. Your revalidation must be confirmed by a suitable confirmer — ideally your line manager. Your reflective discussion must be held with a fellow NMC registrant. Neither role can be fulfilled by just any nurse; the NMC sets specific criteria for both.

13. How many hours of training for revalidation?

You must complete 35 hours of CPD over your three-year revalidation period. At least 20 of those hours must be participatory — meaning you are actively engaging with others, such as attending a training course, workshop, or peer discussion, rather than learning alone.

14. Can I do my revalidation online?

Your revalidation application is submitted online through your MyNMC account. However, certain requirements — such as your reflective discussion and confirmation — must take place in person or via a live virtual meeting. CPD can include online learning, but at least 20 hours must be participatory.

15. What courses can be paired with NMC Revalidation Awareness Training?

These courses pair well with NMC Revalidation Awareness Training: Record Keeping Training supports accurate portfolio documentation.

Effective Communication Training builds confidence for the reflective discussion and confirmation stages. Equality and Diversity Training links directly to the NMC Code, supporting reflective accounts and CPD evidence. All three can be combined for a practical, revalidation-focused development day.
