The Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF) is a two-day, nationally recognised and Ofqual-regulated qualification designed for those responsible for children’s safety, such as nursery staff and childminders. It meets the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) requirements for staff-to-child ratios.

The Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF) is an Ofqual‑regulated, nationally recognised training programme that equips learners with the skills, knowledge and confidence to respond to emergencies involving babies and children.

It fully meets the requirements of the Department for Education’s EYFS Statutory Framework, which states that early years settings must have at least one person with a current, full paediatric first aid certificate on the premises whenever children are present. Certificates are valid for 3 years, with an annual refresher recommended to keep skills sharp. This qualification ensures participants feel confident and capable when responding to a wide range of paediatric first aid situations.

This training is designed for early years practitioners, childminders, nursery staff and anyone working with young children, and it teaches learners how to assess emergencies, deliver CPR, manage injuries and illnesses, and provide safe, effective treatment across a wide range of paediatric first aid situations.

  • Assessing an emergency situation – Learn how to quickly evaluate dangers, priorities and the child’s condition.
  • Recovery Position – Safely place an unresponsive child or infant in a position that protects their airway.
  • CPR and defibrillation – Deliver effective CPR and use an AED confidently for infants and children.
  • Choking – Recognise choking and apply age‑appropriate techniques to clear the airway
  • Head, neck and back injuries – Provide safe initial support for suspected spinal or head injuries.
  • Anaphylaxis and allergic reactions – Identify severe allergic reactions and administer appropriate first aid
  • Meningitis – Spot early signs of meningitis and act quickly to protect the child.
  • Asthma – Support a child experiencing an asthma attack using recognised first aid steps.

  • Electric shock – Respond safely to electrical injuries in children.

  • Bites and stings – Treat insect bites, stings and minor animal injuries.
