Course Outline

Examine what is Huntington’s Disease

Huntington’s Disease affects the brain, causing movement problems and changes in thinking and feelings. It’s passed down in families through a gene. So we will provide an introduce on Huntington’s disease to help you understand in this section.

  • Definition and brief history of HD
  • Prevalence and incidence rates
  • Typical age of onset and duration

Discuss Gene and Huntington Disease

Genes are like body instructions. In Huntington’s Disease, a gene doesn’t work right, causing the brain to act differently and leading to the disease. We will discuss more about gene and Huntington disease in this section.

  • Caused by mutation in HTT gene
  • Autosomal dominant inheritance
  • 50% chance of inheriting mutated gene from affected parent
  • Reduced penetration and variable expression

Review Signs and Symptoms of Huntington’s Disease

What are the main signs to watch out for? Signs include uncontrolled movements, coordination troubles, and behavior changes.

Catching these signs early is important for diagnosis.

  • Main symptoms (movement, cognitive, psychiatric)
  • Changes in mobility, cognition, emotions and behaviour
  • Progression over time

Consider Diagnosis & Treatment

A gene test diagnoses Huntington’s Disease. While there’s no cure, treatments help manage symptoms and make life better for those with the disease.

This part of the HD Training focuses on that.

  • Genetic testing for HTT mutation
  • Presymptomatic vs diagnostic testing
  • Lack of cure or disease-modifying treatments
  • Medications and therapies for symptom management

Examine living with Huntington’s Disease & caring for someone with Huntington’s Disease

Daily life with Huntington’s Disease can be tough. Caregivers are crucial, helping with daily tasks and understanding the challenges.
