About Paediatric First Aid Training

Children’s first aid is a quick and right medical help given to babies and kids in urgent situations.

Basically, Paediatric First Aid training is for anyone who takes care of children. This includes parents, teachers, and health workers taking care of children.

Pediatric first aid involves various medical actions. The training covers things like basic life support, including CPR, and how to treat common childhood injuries such as burns, cuts, and fractures.

Learning how to do pediatric first aid correctly is essential. It can help save a child’s life in serious situations, making it an important part of childcare and education.

Not knowing children’s first aid as someone in charge of children, like teachers and nursery staff, can have serious concerns. In emergencies, they may not know how to provide basic medical help, and may possibly put a child’s life at risk.

Children can come across accidents or health issues, and without proper training, there’s a risk of not responding properly, leading to more severe outcomes. Knowing first aid is crucial for ensuring the safety and well-being of children under their care.

Why choose the baby first aid course?

  • Compliance and best practices: Get an Ofsted-approved certificate to meet rules and show you’re good at keeping kids safe.
  • Reduced risk and liability: Make sure your group is ready for emergencies to avoid legal problems.
  • Boosted team confidence: Help your team stay calm and act well in emergencies, keeping things peaceful.
  • Better child safety: Acting early can really help a child if they get hurt or sick, maybe even save a life.
  • Nationally recognised certificate: When your team finishes, they get a certificate that’s good for three years.

What will your staff learn?

  • The Law relating to First Aid: Know legal duties and compliance with first aid regulations.
  • Unconsciousness (including seizure): Identify signs of unconsciousness, weigh situations, and respond safely.
  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): Learn CPR for babies and children of all ages, including using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
  • Choking, shock, wounds and bleeding: Learn procedures to handle choking, manage shock, treat various wounds and bleeding, and apply suitable dressings.
  • Minor injuries: Learn how to handle sprains, strains, bumps, and bruises correctly.
  • Bone injuries: Identify signs of broken bones and know what to do.
  • Burns and scalds: Know different types and provide first aid for each.
  • Poisoning: Identify signs of poisoning and know what to do in different situations.
  • Anaphylactic shock: Identify symptoms and give an EpiPen if necessary.
  • Head injuries: Know signs of different head injuries and respond correctly.
  • Epilepsy, asthma and diabetes: Learn how to manage seizures, asthma attacks, and diabetic emergencies in children.

What you need to know about Paediatric First Aid (PFA) for Early Years Education:

In places like schools and early education, there are rules about having someone trained in paediatric first aid. They need to have a current certificate, and this person should be around when kids are there, even on trips.

The certificate has to meet specific criteria.

For staff who got their qualification after June 30, 2016, they need either a full PFA or emergency PFA certificate within three months of starting.

Childminders and anyone in charge of kids should also have a current paediatric first aid certificate.

This training needs to be renewed every three years. Employers should consider things like the number of kids and staff to make sure there’s someone trained to handle emergencies.

Who should think about children and babies first aid training:

  • Everyone in EYFS, even if it’s not a must, because being ready in an emergency helps kids a lot.
  • People watching over kids during outings or trips.
  • People working with kids who have special needs or health issues.

Paediatric First Aid FAQs

Q: What is blended Paediatric first aid?

A: Blended Paediatric first aid training combines online learning with in-person practical classes.

This method offers flexibility and reduces cost, allowing you to learn theory at your own pace and then practice needed skills under the supervision of a qualified trainer.

Q: How long is a Paediatric first aid course?

A: The length of Paediatric first aid courses can vary depending on the chosen training focus and delivery method.

However, a typical face to face or blended course usually lasts 2 days, with online units taking up a portion of the time and the remaining offered to hands-on practice and assessments.

Q: Can you do Paediatric first aid online?

A: Yes, some companies offer purely online Paediatric first aid courses.

While these can provide basic knowledge, they usually lack the necessary practical component where you learn and refine needed skills like CPR and bandaging techniques.

Blended courses ensure you gain both theory understanding and practical ability.

Q: How long does first aid training last?

A: Most Paediatric first aid certificates are valid for three years. After that, a refresher course is proposed to renew your knowledge and skills.

This helps you stay confident and prepared to handle urgent situations involving children.

Q: What is the difference between Paediatric first aid and first aid?

A: Both types of first aid give you the skills to handle emergencies, but Paediatric first aid focuses only on children.

Key differences include:

    • Body Size: Children have different body sizes, weights, and growth compared to adults, requiring specific skills for CPR, wound care, and other interventions.
    • Common emergencies: Paediatric first aid deals with things like a child choking on small things, having febrile seizures, or allergic reactions.
    • Dealing with Feelings: Children might be more scared or confused during emergencies, requiring different ways to talk to the child and calming methods.

Q: What are the 3 aims of Paediatric first aid?

A: 1. Preserve life: The primary aim is to prevent further harm, help children remain in stable condition, and call for qualified help if needed.

    1. Minimise injury or illness: First aid interventions aim to reduce the severity of an injury or illness until further medical care is available.
    2. Promote recovery: Providing proper care can speed up the healing process and improve the child’s general well-being.

Q: What is Level 3 paediatric first aid?

A: Level 3 Paediatric First Aid is a nationally accepted qualification in the UK that provides a higher level of training compared to basic first aid courses.

It covers a wider range of topics, including:

    • More difficult injuries and illnesses
    • Management of chronic conditions
    • Use of basic medical tools
    • Advanced CPR techniques
    • Anaphylaxis management

This level is often required for experts working in childcare settings or those responsible for supervising large groups of children.

Q: Can you fail a Paediatric first aid course?

A: Yes, it’s possible to fail a Paediatric first aid course depending on the specific assessment methods and standards.

Usually, evaluation includes both written tests and showing what you can do. If you do not do well enough in either part, you might not pass.

We can also give you extra help to make sure you get it right.
