Why More Moving and Handling Trainers Are Needed?

There are some main reasons why the UK needs even more moving and handling teachers:

  1. More older people require help with movement and transfers – so the demand for good training keeps increasing. There was a 75% rise from 2021-2023 in care home seniors over age 85 – around 65% require help with movement.
  2. Stricter rules exist lately around safety and manual handling. Care homes and hospitals need more teachers for these updated guidelines. Over £15 million paid in 2022 for UK injury claims from poor moving help – a 48% 5-year rise.
  3. Staff and nurses change jobs often in care roles. New hires always need training, so there is a constant need for more instructors.70% turn over last year for home health aides – so constant need to train new hires.
  4. Best practices for safe, dignified movement assistance keep improving. Trainers have to keep up with the newest technologies and techniques. Home helper jobs expected to grow in year 2024.
  5. If staff are not trained properly, they can get hurt lifting patients or fail to treat people with enough care. There need to be enough qualified teachers.

The UK keeps requiring more expert, certified moving and handling trainers – despite more existing classes – to teach our growing and changing student populations safely.

How to become a Moving and Handling trainer in the UK

Step 1: Get Hands-on Experience
First, get 1-2 years recent practice moving and handling patients or clients in hospitals, care homes or community services. This hands-on work helps you learn modern best approaches.

Generally, you will need a moving and handling certification as well.

Step 2: Take a 2-Day Course
Next, enrol in an official 2-day “train the trainer” programme focused on teaching others safe, dignified movement and transfers aligned with the latest UK regulations.

Step 3: Shadow Expert Trainers
Then, spend 1-2 weeks closely watching experienced moving and handling teachers conduct their classes. Note the teaching and review methods they use.

Step 4: Start Co-Training + Getting Feedback

Slowly begin delivering parts of sessions together with your mentoring coach. Receive tips on improving your trainings, teaching skills and reviews. Gradually take the lead under your coach’s oversight.

Step 5: Get Assessed on Abilities
Create trainee evaluations on what they learned. Review comments to keep refining your approaches until you pass final competency checks on par with national standards.

Step 6: Become a Certified Trainer
Finally, once assessed as able to fully train others in safe practices across diverse situations, you earn qualification as an independent moving and handling instructor.
