What is AET Level 3 Training Equivalent To?
The Award in Education and Training (AET) Level 3 is broadly comparable to several Level 3 qualifications on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), but it is important to note that while it matches these in terms of level, the specific focus and content may differ.
The Award in Education and Training (AET) Level 3 is equivalent to:
- A-Levels: It’s at the same level as A-Levels on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF).
- BTEC National Diploma: Equivalent to a BTEC Level 3 National Diploma.
- NVQ Level 3: Comparable to National Vocational Qualifications at Level 3/ QCF level 3.
- Advanced Apprenticeship: On par with an Advanced Apprenticeship in terms of level.
- Access to Higher Education Diploma: At the same level as these diplomas, which prepare students for university entry.
- Scottish Qualifications: Roughly equivalent to SVQ Level 3 or Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Scotland.
- Cambridge Technical Level 3: Equivalent in level to these vocational qualifications.
- Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate: Comparable to this Welsh qualification.
- International Baccalaureate: Similar level to the IB Diploma, though the content is very different.
- T Levels: While newer, T Levels are also at Level 3 and thus comparable in level, though different in focus.
In the UK education and training sector, the AET Level 3 is recognised as an initial teaching qualification, suitable for associate teaching roles in further education and skills training contexts.
How is the AET Level 3 Qualification Assessed?
The Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) course is assessed through three written assignments that cover the main parts of the course.
You will also complete a 15- 30minute micro-teach, where you plan and deliver a short lesson to a small group. As part of this, you will create a lesson plan and handouts, take part in peer observations, write a reflective journal, and collect feedback from your tutor and classmates.
These tasks show that you understand the course content and can apply what you’ve learned in a real teaching situation.
1. Written Assignments
You will complete a series of short written tasks based on the course units. These show your understanding of teaching roles, planning, assessment, and how to create a safe and supportive learning environment.
These are usually done as essays, case studies, or question-and-answer formats.
2. Micro-Teach Session
You will plan and deliver a 15–30 minute lesson to a small group. This can be in person or online. You will be assessed on how well you:
- Plan the lesson
- Deliver the content clearly
- Use teaching methods to engage learners
- Communicate and manage the session
- Reflect on your teaching afterwards
3. Observation and Feedback
During the micro-teach, you will be observed by a tutor or assessor. You’ll also receive feedback from other learners in the group. This helps you reflect and improve.
Can I Teach with a Level 3 AET Certificate?
The AET qualifies you to teach learners aged 16 and over in the post-16 education sector, including:
- Further Education (FE) colleges
- Healthcare and compliance training
- Fire safety and workplace safety courses
- Private training providers
- Vocational and technical subjects
- Adult education centres
- Emergency services and first aid training
You must also be competent in the subject you are teaching. The AET is a teaching qualification and not a replacement for subject knowledge.
For example, if you want to teach fire safety, you need both the AET and the relevant fire safety qualifications.
What the AET Doesn’t Qualify You For
The AET does not qualify you to teach in primary or secondary schools. To teach in schools, you need Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS), which usually means progressing to a Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET).
The AET also does not qualify you to teach subjects you don’t know. It shows that you can teach, but it doesn’t prove that you have expert knowledge in the subject. For example, if you want to teach first aid, you’ll still need a recognised first aid qualification as well as the AET.
Next Steps: The AET is often the first step. Many teachers then pursue further qualifications such as the CET (Certificate in Education and Training) or DET (Diploma in Education and Training).
Once you complete the Level 5 DET, you can apply for QTLS, which is equivalent to QTS and allows you to teach in schools across England.
Note: Requirements can vary by institution and subject. Always check with potential employers or educational institutions for their specific needs.

Level 3 AET FAQs
What jobs can you get with aet level 3?
With a Level 3 AET qualification, you can work as a trainer, tutor, or instructor in adult education, vocational training, workplace compliance, or community learning.
Roles include health and safety trainer, functional skills tutor, and sector-specific educator. It’s ideal for entry-level teaching in post-16 settings across various industries.
Choosing AET Level 3 vs Train the Trainer Course?
Choosing between the Level 3 AET and a Train the Trainer course depends on what you want to do in your career. The AET is an official qualification that is great for teaching adults and can help you move on to higher teaching certificates like QTLS.
It covers important areas like inclusive teaching, assessment, and legal duties.
Train the Trainer courses are usually not officially regulated, more flexible, and designed for training people at work without needing formal teaching qualifications.
If you want recognised qualifications for wider teaching roles, the AET is the better option. But if you only need to train people within your own organisation, Train the Trainer might be enough.
How long does an AET course take?
The Level 3 AET course typically takes between a few days and 12 months to complete, depending on your study mode. Full-time learners may finish in 3–5 days, while part-time or distance learners often take 6–12 weeks. Flexibility allows you to study at your own pace.
At Caring for Care, our Level 3 AET Course runs for just 3 days at our location in Stoke-on-Trent. You will need to attend in person to benefit from the course.
Do you need experience to take the Level 3 AET course?
No prior teaching experience is required to enrol in the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET). It’s specifically designed as an entry-level qualification for those new to teaching or training.
While having subject knowledge or some exposure to adult learning environments can be helpful, the course builds foundational skills from the ground up.
This makes it suitable for beginners, career changers, or professionals looking to formalise their teaching role.
What can I teach with level 3 aet?
With a Level 3 AET qualification, you can teach adults in post-16 education, including vocational training, workplace compliance, health and safety, and community learning.
It allows you to deliver structured sessions in your area of expertise, as long as you have the relevant subject knowledge or experience.
What is aet level 3 equivalent to?
The Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) is equal in level to an A-Level or NVQ Level 3 within the UK qualification framework.
It is an introductory teaching qualification designed for adult education and vocational training, providing the basic skills needed to plan, deliver, and assess learning.
What is the difference between Level 3 AET and Train the Trainer Course?
The Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) is an official teaching qualification for those starting in adult education. It focuses on planning, delivering, and assessing lessons that include all learners.
On the other hand, a Train the Trainer course is usually not regulated and is more flexible. It is aimed at workplace trainers who teach staff within their own organisation.
AET helps people move into formal teaching roles, while Train the Trainer is for practical, job-specific training without a formal teaching certificate.
Should I choose face-to-face, online, or virtual AET training?
Choose based on your learning style and availability. Face-to-face AET courses offer hands-on practice and peer interaction, trainer support, ideal for building classroom confidence.
Level 3 AET Course Online options offer flexibility and suit independent learners with good self-discipline. However, they tend to be theory-heavy and don’t provide immediate feedback when you get stuck.
Virtual (live online) AET Level 3 training course blends convenience with real-time tutor support, making it a balanced choice. If you need structured guidance but can’t travel, virtual delivery is often the most practical.
I really enjoyed the course, it is a great starting point for teaching.
