Contact UsDo I need to have prior knowledge before attending this course?
Yes you do. You need to have prior knowledge and competence within the subject at a Train the Trainer level. Importantly, we will ask you to provide evidence prior to attending the course. If you are unable to provide evidence you will not be allowed to attend, our normal terms and conditions of booking will apply. This course is to teach you to deliver your own course on the subject, not to teach you the subject itself.
Will I have to conduct a microteach?
Yes you will be required to conduct a minimum 15 minute microteach during the course to the rest of the class.

Course Outline:
- Recovery Position
The recovery position is a first aid technique that keeps an unconscious person’s airway clear and stops them from choking on vomit. It also prevents the tongue from blocking the airway.
This position is taught in the Basic Life Support (BLS) course. In the refresher course, participants will go over the right way to place someone in the recovery position and practise using a manikin.
- Bleeding
The refresher course will explain the causes of bleeding, such as external and internal bleeding. Participants will learn how to control bleeding and reduce the risks of harm.
Control measures covered in the refresher course:
- Direct pressure
- Elevation
- Tourniquets
Risk limitation strategies:
- Wearing personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Avoiding contact with blood and bodily fluids
- Disposing of sharps and needles safely
- Shock
The course will review the signs and symptoms of shock and how to respond to help people who are in shock.
Shock happens when the body’s tissues don’t get enough oxygen. It can be caused by bleeding, dehydration, or infections.
Treatment for shock includes:
- Laying the person down with their head slightly raised
- Loosening tight clothing
- Keeping the person warm with blankets or a coat
- Stopping any bleeding
- Giving fluids if the person is conscious and able to swallow
- Calling 999 right away
- CPR Demonstration and Practice (D.R.S.A.B.C.)
The refresher course will include a demonstration and practice of the D.R.S.A.B.C. protocol for CPR. D.R.S.A.B.C. stands for:
- D – Danger
- R – Response
- S – Send for help
- A – Airway
- B – Breathing
- C – Circulation
Participants will get the chance to practise CPR on a manikin.
- Unconsciousness and Head Injuries
The refresher course will teach how to assess and manage people who are unconscious or have head injuries.
