BLS Train the Trainer Refresher FAQs

1. How do I maintain BLS instructor status?

Maintaining BLS instructor status usually involves keeping your certification current through regular refresher training, teaching a minimum number of courses each year, and staying updated with the latest resuscitation guidelines.

At Caring for Care, our approach supports instructors with ongoing CPD opportunities, up‑to‑date resources, and refresher pathways to help you stay confident, competent, and compliant.

2. What is the difference between the full course and the refresher?

A full BLS trainer course is designed for new instructors and covers the complete programme: core clinical skills, teaching methods, assessment techniques, and resource use.

A refresher is shorter and focuses on updating existing instructors, reinforcing competence, and aligning them with the latest resuscitation guidelines, teaching standards, and best practice.

3. When should a bls trainer course be refreshed?

A BLS trainer course is typically refreshed every year to ensure instructors stay aligned with the latest resuscitation guidelines, teaching standards, and clinical best practice. Regular refreshers also help maintain confidence, competence, and compliance, especially for those delivering training in healthcare or regulated care environments.

4. Can you teach first aid as a bls instructor?

Yes. A BLS instructor can teach CPR, but teaching wider first aid depends on the awarding body and the scope of your qualification. BLS focuses on clinical resuscitation skills, while first aid includes a broader range of emergency responses. You will need to complete an additional First Aid Trainer qualification to teach the full suite confidently and compliantly.

5. Is refresher training a legal requirement?

Refresher training isn’t usually a strict legal requirement on its own, but employers must ensure staff remain competent, confident, and up to date with current guidance. Because of this duty of care, we recommend that you or your staff treat regular refreshers as essential for maintaining compliance, meeting regulatory expectations, and demonstrating safe practice.

6. What are the pre-requisite for this course?

A BLS trainer course has only a few simple pre‑requisites. You’ll need a valid, up‑to‑date BLS qualification and enough practical experience to demonstrate safe, competent skills during the course. We also expect basic teaching experience, but this isn’t always essential. At Caring for Care, we guide you through everything you need to get started confidently.

7. What are the legal implication if I don’t update my certificate?

If you don’t update your BLS certificate, there are no automatic legal penalties, but there are important implications. Employers must prove staff are competent and working to current guidance, so an expired certificate can raise compliance issues, increase organisational risk, and make it harder to evidence safe practice.

In regulated settings, this may also affect audits, inspections, and professional credibility.

8. What skills must a bls trainer have?

A BLS trainer needs strong clinical competence in CPR, AED use, and basic life‑support skills, alongside the ability to teach clearly, assess learners, and give constructive feedback.

They should be confident demonstrating techniques, managing a classroom, and adapting training to different experience levels while staying aligned with current resuscitation guidelines and best practice.

9. Is the bls trainer refresher course face to face or virtual?

Our BLS Trainer Refresher courses are delivered face to face for individual bookings in Stoke, Warrington, London, and other venues across the UK. For in‑house group bookings, we come to you. We will send our experienced trainers to your workplace, ensuring your team receives hands‑on, up‑to‑date refresher training that fits your environment and operational needs.

Face‑to‑face BLS instructor refresher training gives you or your team hands‑on practice, real‑time coaching, and stronger skill retention. It allows instructors to refine demonstrations, correct technique immediately, and build confidence through practical scenarios that are difficult to replicate in virtual formats.

10. Why book with Caring for Care?

Caring for Care is trusted by thousands, with over 11,000 five‑star reviews and highly experienced instructors from diverse clinical backgrounds. We deliver high‑quality, face‑to‑face training with free learner resources, discounted trainer packs, clear pricing, and flexible options — individual bookings across multiple UK locations or cost‑effective in‑house group training delivered directly at your workplace.
