Face Fit Testing

Face Fit Testing ensures that participants know how to correctly use respiratory protective equipment, which protects against harmful airborne particles and pollutants. By gaining this knowledge and skill, participants can effectively protect their own health and safety.

Gain the required skills

Face fit testing is a simple test which checks whether a person’s mask fits their face shape and size.

An inadequate fit will significantly reduce the protection provided to the wearer and reduction in protection may lead to immediate or long-term ill-health. A correct fitting facepiece is vital at all times to prevent exposure and the Face Fit test also provides verification that the wearer can put the facepiece on correctly.

What is qualitative face fit test?

In qualitative face fit testing, the effectiveness of a face mask or respirator is assessed by detecting any leaks between the mask and the wearer's face. The wearer performs various exercises while a test agent, such as a bitter or sweet solution, is sprayed or nebulized around the mask. The wearer then indicates if they can detect the test agent's taste or smell. Typically, the testers conduct this test for half-face masks or filtering face pieces (FFP) to assess the seal of the mask against the wearer's face.

How long is the certificate valid?

*The certificate is valid until there is a change in the individual's physical condition, such as weight gain or loss, significant dental work, or facial changes in the faceseal area, such as scarring or moles. Some companies may have a retesting policy every one, two, or three years, depending on the level of risk.

What is face fit testing?

Face fit testing is a quick check that ensures a mask fits a person’s face properly. If the fit is poor, it won’t provide enough protection, leading to possible health problems.

It’s important to wear a mask that fits correctly to avoid exposure to harmful substances, and the test also helps to confirm that the wearer is putting on the mask properly.

Does a legal requirement exist for face fit testing?

Certainly! In the UK, it is mandatory for individuals who use respiratory protective equipment (RPE) to undergo a face fit test to ensure that the equipment fits properly and offers adequate protection.

This is a legal requirement under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations.

These regulations were first implemented in the UK in 1988 and they oblige employers to provide appropriate RPE and face fit testing to their employees.

Who would benefit from learning the course?

The law legally requires anyone who wears a tight or close fitting mask to work to undergo a face fit test.

They should have a certificate to prove any tight-fitting mask offers them adequate levels of protection.
