Frequently Asked Question

1. Do You Need Prior Training to Take a Food Safety and Hygiene Course?

No prior training is usually required. Food Safety and Hygiene courses are designed for individuals with little or no experience in food handling.

They cover the essential principles of food safety, personal hygiene, contamination risks, and legal responsibilities.
If you already have some background in food safety, it may help you grasp the material more quickly, but it’s not a requirement.

2. What are the food hygiene regulations in care homes?

Care homes in the UK must comply with the Food Safety Act 1990, Food Hygiene Regulations 2006, and Food Information Regulations 2014.

These laws require safe food handling, thorough cleaning, allergen control, and proper storage and cooking practices. Providers must follow the 4Cs of hygiene—cleaning, cooking, chilling, and cross-contamination—and implement HACCP-based procedures.

Regular inspections under the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme assess compliance, and poor standards can lead to enforcement action or loss of registration.

3. Who Needs To Take a Food Safety Course?

Anyone aged 16 or over can take a food safety course, and it’s often required by employers before starting work in food preparation or service.

  • Legal Requirement: Under the Food Safety Act 1990 and Food Hygiene Regulations 2006, employers must ensure food handlers receive appropriate training.
  • Competent Person: Trained food handlers are considered competent to follow hygiene procedures, prevent contamination, and comply with safety standards.
  • Training Content: Courses cover food hazards, temperature control, cleaning procedures, allergen awareness, and personal hygiene.
  • Level of Training Needed: The level depends on your role—Level 1 for basic awareness, Level 2 for general food handlers, and Level 3 for supervisors or managers.

4. Why Invest in Food Safety Training for Your Team?

Food safety and hygiene training helps staff prevent contamination, handle food responsibly, and protect vulnerable individuals. For businesses, it ensures legal compliance, reduces the risk of foodborne illness, and strengthens public trust.

Well-trained teams improve operational standards, support positive inspection outcomes, and safeguard brand reputation—especially vital in care, hospitality, and catering environments where safety and confidence are paramount.

5. Can You Work with Food Without Training?

No—food safety training is a legal requirement for anyone handling food in the UK.

This training is important for people handling food for:

  • Legal Compliance: Employers must ensure staff are trained to meet hygiene regulations.
  • Competence: Untrained staff may pose risks to public health.
  • Liability: Breaches can lead to fines, closures, or prosecution.

Training ensures food handlers understand how to prevent contamination, store food safely, and protect customers.

This training suits anyone handling food, including care staff, caterers, and volunteers. It supports legal compliance and ensures safe, hygienic practices across all food-related roles.

6. Who Is the Responsible Person for Food Safety?

The responsible person for food safety is the individual who oversees food safety in a business or organisation. This is usually the business owner or manager, the head chef or kitchen supervisor, or the person in control of food operations. In shared premises, multiple responsible persons may need to coordinate food safety measures.

Their key duties include conducting food safety risk assessments, implementing hygiene procedures, ensuring staff receive appropriate training, and monitoring compliance while updating practices as needed.

8. What Does a Trained Food Handler Do?

Trained food handlers are responsible for following hygiene procedures and preventing cross-contamination.

They must store, prepare, and serve food safely, monitor temperatures and expiry dates, and clean equipment and work areas properly. They are also responsible for reporting hazards or breaches in food safety and supporting allergen awareness and safe labelling. Their role is vital in protecting public health and maintaining compliance with food safety laws.

9. Should You Choose Face-to-Face, Virtual, or E-Learning?

Choosing the right format for food safety and hygiene training depends on your team’s needs. Face-to-face sessions suit new staff and hands-on learners, offering practical experience and direct support. Virtual training provides flexibility for remote teams while maintaining live interaction.

E-learning is ideal for experienced staff needing a refresher or for meeting compliance quickly across shifts. Each option supports legal requirements—just ensure the course is accredited and role-appropriate.

10. Is Food Safety Training Mandatory for Care Homes?

Yes, food safety training is mandatory for care homes in the UK. Staff involved in preparing, handling, or serving food must receive appropriate training under the Food Safety Act 1990 and Food Hygiene Regulations 2006. This ensures safe practices, protects vulnerable residents, and supports compliance with Care Quality Commission (CQC) standards.

Employers are legally responsible for providing this training, and refresher courses are typically recommended every three years to maintain competence and regulatory alignment.

11. Can Caring for Care Provide this food safety training onsite?

Yes, Caring for Care can provide food safety training onsite at your location. This allows your team to learn in their own working environment, using familiar equipment and routines.

Our trainer will come to your location, saving travel time and reducing disruption to your schedule. This flexible approach allows your team to train together in context, ensuring everyone receives clear, relevant guidance tailored to your workplace.

12. Do I legally need a food hygiene certificate?

You don’t legally need a food hygiene certificate in the UK, but you must have appropriate training if you handle food. The law requires food handlers to be supervised and trained to ensure safe practices, as outlined in the Food Safety Act 1990 and Food Hygiene Regulations 2006. A certificate isn’t mandatory, but it’s a recognised way to prove competence and is widely expected by employers and environmental health officers.

13. What Role Does Food Safety Training Play in Regulatory Compliance?

This course supports compliance by aligning staff practices with UK food safety laws, including the Food Safety Act 1990 and Food Hygiene Regulations 2006. It equips learners to handle food safely, prevent contamination, and follow hygiene procedures confidently.

By ensuring staff understand legal duties and best practice, our training helps care providers meet CQC expectations, avoid enforcement action, and maintain high standards in food preparation and service.
