Mental Health Awareness Course – FAQs

Should I train my staff in mental health awareness?

Absolutely. Training your staff in mental health awareness strengthens team resilience, reduces stigma, and supports safer, more inclusive care. It equips staff to recognise early signs of distress, respond appropriately, and meet CQC expectations around wellbeing.

Whether you’re onboarding, preparing for inspection, or improving culture, this training helps embed compassionate, compliant practice across your service. It’s a proactive step toward better outcomes for staff and those they support.

What training format is best for training staff on mental health?

The best format for mental health training balances compliance, cost-efficiency and team engagement. Blended delivery combines onsite sessions with digital modules to support onboarding, reflective feedback and consistent standards across teams.

Face-to-face training encourages open discussion and team cohesion, while online elements offer flexibility and ongoing reinforcement. This approach meets CQC expectations, reduces travel costs and accommodates varied learning styles and shift patterns.

Choosing depends on your staff’s needs, but a mix ensures broad reach and addresses varied learning styles and time constraints effectively.

Who should receive mental health training, and why is it important?

Everyone working in care, education, or support roles should have mental health training. It helps staff notice early signs of mental distress, respond in the right way, and create safe, inclusive environments. Managers and senior staff learn how to support mental health across the whole team, while frontline workers build confidence and reduce stigma.

When this training is given to all roles, it improves wellbeing, helps people communicate better, and builds stronger, more supportive teams, especially in high-stress or emotional jobs.

How often should organisations provide mental health awareness training?

Organisations should provide mental health awareness training at least annually, with refreshers every 12–18 months or following major changes in staffing, policy, or inspection outcomes. Training should be tailored to organisational needs, risk factors, and the specific type of training required.

Regular training supports compliance, promotes an inclusive workplace culture, and ensures staff remain confident in recognising and responding to mental health concerns. Embedding this training into staff induction and ongoing CPD helps maintain safe, supportive environments in line with regulatory expectations.

Training should form part of a proactive, year-round approach to mental wellbeing. Its frequency should be reviewed regularly, based on internal incidents, changes in work processes, and the specific demands of the sector.

What courses support a whole-team approach to mental wellbeing?

Courses that pair well with Mental Health Awareness include Safeguarding Adults, Dementia Awareness, Stress Management, and Equality and Diversity. These combinations support inclusive care, emotional resilience, and early intervention.

For leadership teams, pairing with Duty of Care or Trauma-Informed Practice strengthens strategic oversight. Together, they promote safer environments, improve confidence, and embed a culture of wellbeing across services.

Does Caring for Care offer face-to-face Mental Health Awareness Training?

Yes, Caring for Care provides face-to-face Mental Health Awareness Training for in-house bookings across the UK, including onsite delivery for care homes, supported living services, and residential teams. For individual learners, the course is typically delivered virtually via Zoom.

The class remains interactive, practical, and engaging—designed to build confidence, promote inclusive care, and support safer, more responsive environments.

How often should staff complete a mental health refresher course?

A mental health refresher course is typically due every 12–18 months, or sooner if there are changes in staffing, policies, or internal incidents. Regular refreshers help maintain confidence, reinforce inclusive practices, and ensure staff stay up to date with responsibilities and response strategies. They also support safer environments and promote a proactive, year-round approach to mental wellbeing across teams.

What’s the difference between Mental Health Awareness and Mental Health First Aid training?

No—Mental Health Awareness builds general understanding, while Mental Health First Aid equips staff to respond to crises and offer support. Mental Health Awareness courses introduce key concepts, reduce stigma, and help staff recognise early signs of distress.

They’re ideal for induction, culture-building, and inclusive practice. Mental Health First Aid training is more in-depth, equipping designated staff to respond to crises, offer initial support, and guide individuals toward professional help. It’s suited for roles with added responsibility in safeguarding and wellbeing.

Should Your Staff Take Mental Health Awareness or Level 2 Mental Health First Aid Training?

Mental Health Awareness training is ideal for building foundational understanding, reducing stigma, and recognising early signs of mental distress. It works well as part of whole-team induction and promotes inclusive practice across your organisation.

Level 2 Mental Health First Aid is more advanced and better suited to staff with additional responsibilities in wellbeing or safeguarding. It equips them to respond to mental health crises, offer immediate support, and direct individuals to appropriate help.

The right choice depends on the staff member’s role, the level of risk they manage, and your organisation’s specific needs.

As I have told others... It is the best, most informative training I have ever attended
