Emergency Paediatric First Aid Training

The 1‑day Emergency Paediatric First Aid (EPFA) course is a 6‑hour, Level 3 accredited programme designed to give parents, carers, and childcare professionals the essential lifesaving skills needed to respond confidently to emergencies involving babies and young children.

The training focuses on immediate, emergency‑only responses, covering critical topics such as CPR, choking, severe bleeding, shock, and how to manage an unresponsive child.

Often referred to as the “6‑hour” or “1‑day” course, EPFA is ideal for staff who require a basic emergency qualification rather than the full paediatric first aid certificate. It is commonly used to meet the requirements of the Voluntary Ofsted Childcare Register or as a refresher for team members who are not designated as the primary first aider.

While highly practical and confidence‑building, it does not meet the full Ofsted and EYFS requirements—that standard is covered by the 2‑day Full Paediatric First Aid course.

1‑Day vs 2‑Day Paediatric First Aid: What’s the Difference

The key difference between the 1‑day Emergency Paediatric First Aid (EPFA) course and the 2‑day Full Paediatric First Aid course is the depth of training, the range of topics covered, and the level of legal compliance required for childcare settings.

The 1‑day EPFA focuses on essential, life‑saving skills for immediate emergencies.
The 2‑day Full Paediatric First Aid course provides comprehensive training, covering both emergency response and the wider management of paediatric illnesses and injuries. It also meets the full requirements for Ofsted‑registered childcare providers.

Feature 1-Day Emergency Paediatric First Aid 2-Day Full Paediatric First Aid
Duration 6 Hours (Approx.) 12 Hours (Approx.)
Depth Basic Life Support / Immediate Action In-depth and Comprehensive
Ofsted / EYFS Suitable for assistants or new staff Mandatory for main carers and Ofsted-registered settings
Best For Parents, Babysitters, Voluntary Register Nursery Staff, Childminders, Nannies

What Does Qualsafe Accreditation Mean?

If a course has Qualsafe Accreditation, it means it meets the official UK standards for first aid and safety training. Qualsafe Awards is the organisation that checks these courses, and it is watched over by Ofqual (the UK’s qualifications regulator).

This means:

  • The training is good quality
  • Trainers are skilled and know what they’re doing
  • The course follows clear rules for assessing the skills you’ve learned.

When you pass a Qualsafe course, you get a certificate that is recognised by employers and organisations all across the UK.

Emergency Paediatric First Aid Course FAQs

1. How does this course help my organisation meet EYFS and Ofsted requirements?

The EPFA course meets the EYFS requirement for having staff trained in emergency paediatric first aid. This helps childcare providers demonstrate compliance during Ofsted inspections and ensures that at least one trained person is available at all times. It strengthens your safeguarding provision and supports safer operational practice across your setting.

2. Can we run this course onsite for our staff?

Yes. Many organisations choose onsite delivery because it reduces disruption, keeps staff in familiar surroundings, and allows training to be tailored to your environment. Onsite sessions are ideal for nurseries, schools, and clubs that need multiple staff trained at once, offering a cost‑effective and convenient solution.

3. How many staff can be trained in one session?

Group sizes typically range from 6 to 12 learners to ensure high‑quality, hands‑on practice. This allows the trainer to give personalised support while keeping the session efficient for your organisation. Larger teams can be trained over multiple sessions to maintain compliance and ensure everyone receives the same standard of instruction.

4. Will this qualification help us maintain required staffing ratios?

Yes. EPFA is recognised under EYFS as suitable for meeting emergency first aid requirements. Having trained staff helps you maintain safe ratios, especially during absences, holidays, or unexpected staffing changes. It ensures your setting always has someone competent to respond to emergencies involving infants and children.

5. How long is the certificate valid, and when should we retrain staff?

The EPFA certificate is valid for three years. Many organisations choose to refresh training sooner to maintain confidence and ensure staff remain competent in emergency skills. Planning refresher cycles helps you stay compliant, avoid gaps in coverage, and maintain a consistent standard of safety across your team.

6. What are the benefits of EPFA training for our organisation’s risk management?

EPFA training strengthens your organisation’s ability to respond to emergencies quickly and effectively, reducing the likelihood of serious incidents. It supports your risk assessments, improves safeguarding, and demonstrates a proactive approach to health and safety. This can also enhance parental confidence and support stronger inspection outcomes.

7. Can the course be tailored to our specific environment or risks?

Yes. Trainers can adapt examples and scenarios to reflect your setting—whether you’re a nursery, school, sports club, or activity provider. This ensures staff practise skills in context, making the training more relevant and improving real‑world readiness for the types of emergencies your team is most likely to encounter.

8. What equipment or space do we need for onsite training?

Most settings only need a clean, open space large enough for practical activities such as CPR and recovery position practice. Trainers bring all required equipment, including manikins and training materials. A staff room, hall, or classroom is usually sufficient, making onsite delivery simple and low‑disruption.

9. Is EPFA enough for all staff, or do some need the full Paediatric First Aid qualification?

EPFA is suitable for meeting emergency‑only requirements, but some roles—particularly those counted in full EYFS ratios—may require the full two‑day Paediatric First Aid qualification. Many organisations use a blended approach: EPFA for general staff and the full qualification for room leaders, supervisors, or designated first aiders.

10. Is there an assessment at the end of the course?

Assessment is practical and continuous throughout the day. Learners demonstrate key skills such as CPR, choking management, and dealing with bleeding or shock. Trainers support learners throughout, ensuring they feel confident and capable before certification is awarded.
