About Prevent Duty Training

Prevent duty training is a required programme in the UK to help organisations and individuals understand and apply the Prevent strategy, which is part of the government’s counter-terrorism efforts.

The goal is to give people the knowledge and skills to spot individuals at risk of being drawn into terrorism and to challenge extremist ideas linked to terrorist groups.

Prevent duty training usually includes understanding radicalisation processes, different types of extremism, and practical actions to help those at risk. This helps promote British values and create an inclusive environment to counter extremist messages.

Following the passing of the Counter Terrorism & Security Act in July of 2015, all schools and education providers have a legal duty to prevent children becoming radicalised.

Frequently Asked Questions?

What is Prevent Duty Training?

Prevent Duty Training is a course that teaches people, especially those in public jobs, how to spot and stop radicalisation and extremism.

The training is required for many public workers in the UK, like teachers, healthcare workers, and local government employees. It’s part of a plan to prevent terrorism and promote community unity.

What is radicalisation?

Radicalisation is the process by which someone gradually adopts increasingly extreme political, religious, or social views. These views can often lead to violence or a rejection of mainstream society. Radicalisation doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a series of steps that can take weeks, months, or even years.

How often should you do a Prevent training?

Typically, Prevent training ( or Prevent duty training) isn’t just a one-off event but happens regularly. The frequency can differ between organisations:

  1. Initial training: New staff often complete Prevent training during induction or onboarding.
  2. Refresher courses: Staff might need to refresh their training annually or every few years.
  3. Updates: If laws, policies, or threats change, extra training sessions may be arranged.
  4. Role-specific training: Some roles need more frequent or detailed training, particularly those with safeguarding duties.
  5. Continuous professional development: Prevent awareness might be part of ongoing professional development throughout the year.

Different sectors (like education, healthcare, and local government) and organisations have varying requirements. For specifics, ask your HR team or safeguarding lead.

What is prevent training for NHS staff?

Prevent training for NHS staff is a special Prevent duty for health workers. It goal to give NHS employees the knowledge and skills to spot and stop radicalisation in healthcare settings.

This is to protect other people possibly at risk and safeguard against any form of harm.

Is prevent duty course a legal requirement?

Yes, the Prevent duty course is mandatory in the UK for specific sectors and organisations under the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015.

It’s crucial to understand that while complying with the Prevent duty is legally required, the exact method or provider of training isn’t specified by law.

Organisations have some leeway in how they conduct training, as long as they can prove their staff are sufficiently trained to meet the Prevent duty.

What is the difference between Channel training and Prevent Radicalisation Training?

Prevent Radicalisation Training ( (also called Prevent duty training or Prevent training) helps all staff spot signs of radical behaviour.

Channel Duty Training is for professionals in the Channel programme, focusing on managing cases and working together.
