Course Outline:

1. Unconsciousness (including seizure):

Unconsciousness refers to the state of being unaware or unresponsive to one’s surroundings. Seizures, on the other hand, are sudden, uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain. The module teaches you how to recognise and respond to unconsciousness and seizures in children.

  • Recognise signs of unconsciousness in children.
  • Understand and respond to seizures in paediatric emergencies.

2. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR):

In the cpr training, you will learn the ABCs of CPR (airway, breathing, and circulation) and how to perform chest compressions and rescue breaths for children.

  • Learn the basics of CPR for children.
  • Get to know hands-on techniques to perform CPR effectively.

3. Choking, shock, wounds, and bleeding:

Choking, Shock, Wound and Bleeding are all important topics in Paediatric Emergency First Aid, as they can be life-threatening conditions that can affect children. You will learn how to recognise and respond to these urgent medical situations, providing basic first aid and calling for medical assistance when needed.

  • Identify and responding to choking incidents in children.
  • Manage shock and providing immediate first aid.
  • Know the proper techniques for addressing wounds and controlling bleeding.

4. Minor injuries:

Treating minor injuries is an integral part of paediatric first aid. Understanding how to handle common childhood injuries is important so you can provide timely and appropriate care, promoting the child’s well-being and preventing complications.

  • Understand how to treat minor injuries such as cuts, scrapes, and bruises in children.

5. Bone injuries:

Bone injuries, such as fractures, sprains, and strains, can be painful and debilitating. It is important to seek medical attention immediately if you suspect that a child has a bone injury.

  • Know indicators suggesting a possible fracture
  • Learn how to use appropriate splinting approaches to limit movement
  • Understand spinal immobilisation guidance

6. Burns and scalds:

Scald and burns are injuries caused by heat. Burns can be caused by fire, hot liquids, or chemicals. Scalds are caused by hot liquids. Both burns and scalds can be serious injuries that require medical attention.

  • Use appropriate first aid measures for burns and scalds in children.

  • Identify signs of poisoning in children.

In paediatric emergency first aid, anaphylactic shock is a serious condition that demands immediate action. This can cause trouble breathing and even make the blood circulation stop completely.

  • Understanding allergies and their potential severity in children.
  • Administering first aid for anaphylactic shock.

9. Head injuries:

Head injuries make it more likely for a child to have long-term problems with their brain. Changes in alertness could mean there’s bleeding, and scans are urgently needed. In this section of our emergency paediatric first aid course, you will focus on:

What is the difference between emergency paediatric first aid training and paediatric first aid training

The main difference between emergency paediatric first aid training and paediatric first aid training lies in depth and scope:

Emergency Paediatric First Aid Training:

  • Focuses on basic life-saving skills: This type of training points out immediate response to dangerous situations like choking, cardiac arrest, and severe allergic reactions.
  • Shorter time:  lasts 2-6 hours, covering only the basics for immediate intervention.
  • Limited skills: Focuses on CPR, basic airway blockage techniques, and calling emergency services.
  • Suitable for: Parents, caregivers, child minder, or anyone who wants basic knowledge for immediate emergencies.
  • Not always certified: May not provide a formal certificate upon completion, depending on the provider.

Paediatric First Aid Training:

  • Broad: Covers a broader range of topics beyond just immediate emergencies.
  • Longer time: Typically lasts 6-12 hours, providing deep understanding and practice.
  • Wider skillset: Covers CPR, choking, bleeding, wounds, burns, common illnesses, seizures, allergic reactions, and more.
  • Suitable for: People working with children, such as teachers, childcare workers, coaches, or those responsible for large groups of children.
  • Certified: Generally leads to a certificate valid for a certain period (e.g., 3 years).

In summary:

  • Emergency Paediatric First Aid: Think of it as the “first line of defense” for basic emergencies.
  • Paediatric First Aid Course: Offers a more thorough skill for managing various children emergencies.

Choosing the right training:

  • Consider your role and job roles around children.
  • Weigh the depth of knowledge and skills you need.
  • Check if any specific qualifications are required in your field.
