Course Summary
- Recognise the Signs and Symptoms of Sepsis Across Patient Groups: Learners will identify early warning signs and red flags for sepsis in adults, children, and neonates, ensuring timely recognition. Practical examples will focus on differentiating symptoms between patient groups and understanding atypical presentations.
- Understand the Pathophysiology of Sepsis: Participants will explain the biological processes involved in sepsis, including the systemic inflammatory response and the body's immune reaction to infection. This will be linked to clinical manifestations and the NEWS2 scoring system.
- Apply the Sepsis Six Protocol in Clinical Practice: Learners will demonstrate how to implement the Sepsis Six interventions (oxygen therapy, fluid resuscitation, antibiotic administration, blood cultures, lactate monitoring, and urine output measurement) effectively within the first hour of identification.
- Identify Patients at High Risk of Sepsis: Learners will evaluate specific patient groups at increased risk, including individuals with chronic illnesses, the immunocompromised, and post-surgical patients, integrating preventative strategies into clinical care.
- Promote Sepsis Prevention and Post-Sepsis Care: Participants will outline key measures for preventing sepsis, such as infection control, patient education, and immunisation, and understand long-term care strategies for survivors, including addressing post-sepsis syndrome

Sepsis Training Course
The Sepsis Awareness Training equips healthcare workers, care staff, and support workers with the knowledge and skills to spot and respond to sepsis, a serious and life-threatening illness.
The course covers what causes sepsis, its symptoms, and who is most at risk, such as older people or those with weak immune systems. Participants will learn how to tell sepsis apart from other illnesses and how to act quickly using the Sepsis Six steps.
Participants will be taught how to spot the early signs and symptoms of sepsis in both adults and children. They will use tools like the NEWS2 chart to assess how ill someone is. The course stresses the importance of acting quickly and treating sepsis right away, such as giving antibiotics and fluids.
The course also covers the difficulties in diagnosing sepsis early, ways to prevent it, and how sepsis affects patients and their families. There will be case studies and real-life examples to help improve decision-making and communication in healthcare settings.
It looks at important UK health guidelines, including those from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
The course teaches how important it is to communicate clearly and write things down correctly to provide good care for patients. You will take part in group discussions, review case studies, and gain confidence in spotting sepsis and getting more help when needed.
The course is ideal for staff working in care homes, hospitals, or the community, especially those caring for vulnerable people. It takes 2 to 3 hours to complete the course, and participants will receive a Level 2 Certificate in Sepsis Awareness.

Sepsis Awareness Course FAQs
1. What is Sepsis Awareness Training?
Sepsis Awareness Training teaches staff how to recognise the early signs and symptoms of sepsis, understand risk factors, and respond promptly and appropriately.
The training covers what sepsis is, how it develops, common warning signs, escalation pathways, and the importance of rapid action. It equips health and social care staff to identify concerns early and help prevent life-threatening deterioration.
2. Why is sepsis awareness important?
Sepsis is a medical emergency that can escalate rapidly and become fatal if not recognised and treated quickly. Early identification and escalation significantly improve survival rates.
Sepsis awareness empowers staff to spot subtle changes, act without delay, and ensure people receive urgent medical attention—helping to save lives and reduce long-term complications.
3. Why do health and social care staff need sepsis awareness training?
Health and social care staff are often the first to notice changes in a person’s condition. Sepsis awareness training helps staff recognise red flags such as confusion, rapid breathing, fever, low temperature, or reduced urine output.
By understanding when and how to escalate concerns, staff can prevent delays in treatment, meet duty of care responsibilities, and provide safer, higher-quality care.
4. When should Sepsis Awareness Training be refreshed?
Sepsis Awareness Training should be refreshed regularly to maintain confidence, knowledge, and compliance with best practice.
Most organisations refresh this training every one to two years, or sooner if guidance changes, incidents occur, or staff roles change. Regular updates reinforce early recognition, clear escalation, and rapid response. Our certificates are valid for 2 years.

Virtual delivery offers flexibility, while face-to-face sessions support deeper discussion and group learning. Training can be tailored to organisational needs.
7. Which courses pair best with this course?
Sepsis Awareness pairs well with Clinical Observations, NEWS2, Deteriorating Patient, and Basic Life Support training to strengthen early recognition and escalation skills.
Additional courses such as Infection Prevention and Control, First Aid, Safeguarding, and Medication Awareness support safer care and help reduce infection-related risks linked to sepsis.
8. What is the duration of this training?
Sepsis Awareness Training typically lasts 2–3 hours, depending on group size and learning needs. The session combines theory, discussion, and real-world scenarios to ensure staff understand how to recognise sepsis, respond appropriately, and escalate concerns confidently.
Certificates are valid for 2 years and due for renewal after 1 to 2 years depending on your local and organisation policy.
9. Which organisations need Sepsis Awareness Training?
Any organisation responsible for caring for individuals at risk of infection should provide Sepsis Awareness Training. This includes care homes, domiciliary care agencies, supported living services, GP practices, community teams, NHS services, private hospitals, and specialist care settings.
The training supports safer practice, regulatory compliance, and improved outcomes.
10. Is this course suitable for staff with no clinical background?
