Venepuncture (Phlebotomy) Train the Trainer Course

The Venepuncture Train the Trainer course is designed for experienced healthcare professionals who already carry out venepuncture and now want to teach it effectively to others.

Rather than learning the procedure from scratch, the course focuses on how to deliver clear, safe, and engaging training on venepuncture within your organisation. You’ll develop skills in lesson planning, assessing competence, giving constructive feedback, and adapting your teaching approach to different learning styles.

A key part of this 2-day training is a 15‑minute micro‑teach, where each learner presents an aspect of the topic and receives feedback from our trainers and peers.

Each learner will be assigned an aspect of the phlebotomy topic to present, such as anatomy, equipment selection, infection prevention, managing complications, or supporting learners in practice.

It’s important to have a solid foundation and experience in clinical phlebotomy before joining this course. By the end, you’ll be confident in training colleagues to perform venepuncture safely and consistently.

Becoming a certified phlebotomist trainer strengthens your clinical credibility and opens pathways into education and leadership. You gain the skills to teach safely, assess competence, and support colleagues with confidence.

Certification also enhances communication, boosts professional recognition, and increases your value within your organisation by helping standardise practice, improve patient safety, and build sustainable in‑house training capacity.

2. Can any nurse or carer teach this course?

Only professionals who are already fully competent and experienced in venepuncture should teach this course. While many nurses, midwives, and senior healthcare assistants may meet this standard, it isn’t suitable for anyone without solid clinical experience in phlebotomy and cannulation.

Trainers must be confident, safe practitioners who can assess others, give feedback, and uphold best‑practice guidelines.

3. When should the training be refreshed?

Training should be refreshed every two or three years, or sooner if there are changes in best‑practice guidance, equipment, or organisational policy. Regular updates ensure trainers maintain confidence, stay aligned with current standards, and continue delivering safe, consistent venepuncture training across their service. Note, our certificate is valid for three years.

4. What is the standard way to teach phlebotomy train the trainer?

A standard phlebotomy Train the Trainer course combines refreshed clinical theory with structured teaching‑skills development. Trainers learn how to demonstrate techniques using simulators, assess competence against recognised frameworks, and deliver clear, step‑by‑step instruction.

The approach blends micro‑teaching, supervised practice, feedback skills, and governance awareness to ensure new instructors can teach safely, confidently, and in line with evidence‑based venepuncture standards.

5. Do you need to have completed a phlebotomy course before taking this?

Yes. You must already be fully trained and competent in venepuncture before joining the Train the Trainer programme. Learners should have solid hands‑on experience, confidence in their own technique, and an interest in teaching others. This ensures you can assess learners safely, give meaningful feedback, and model best‑practice standards.
