Building Confidence as a Trainer

Welcome to Day 3 of our series!

Today, we’re focusing on building confidence as a trainer. Speaking in front of a group can feel daunting at first, but with the right strategies, you’ll become a more engaging and confident trainer.

First, let’s look at a few strategies for boosting your confidence. One effective technique is to focus on your preparation.

Knowing your material well will help you feel more at ease and allow you to stay flexible if discussions take an unexpected turn. It’s also helpful to familiarise yourself with the environment.

Arrive early, check your equipment, and take a few moments to visualise a successful session. A little mental prep goes a long way.

Another key confidence-builder is to embrace body language. Use open gestures, make eye contact, and remember to pause occasionally.

These small changes help you connect with your learners and project confidence. Smiling and taking deep breaths can also help ease nerves, creating a positive and calm presence.

To practise delivering information clearly and effectively, try this simple exercise: stand in front of a mirror or record yourself on video, and explain a concept or skill from your training material.

Focus on speaking clearly, keeping your body relaxed, and projecting your voice.

Watching yourself back can reveal areas for improvement and help you become more comfortable with your presentation style.

Another great exercise is to practise with a partner or in front of a small, supportive audience.

Ask them to give constructive feedback on what you did well and where you can improve.

This feedback will not only help you refine your delivery but also get used to speaking in front of others in a safe environment.

  • Preparation Routine: Run through your material the day before, visualising a successful session. Try mentally rehearsing the first few minutes to ease into a strong start.
  • Breathing Techniques: Practise deep breathing exercises, such as the 4-7-8 technique—inhale for 4 counts, hold for 7, and exhale for 8. This helps calm your nervous system before speaking.
  • Power Stance: Stand tall, shoulders relaxed, and take up space—your posture sends signals to your brain that boost confidence.
  • Positive Affirmations: Remind yourself that you’re well-prepared and here to make a positive impact on your learners. Simple affirmations like “I’m ready for this” can be grounding.
  • Mindfulness Check-In: Just before starting, tune into your body. Notice your feet on the ground, your breath, and any tension, allowing you to start with awareness and calm.
  • Pace Yourself: When nervous, we often rush our words. Practice slowing down, using pauses to emphasise points and give learners a moment to absorb information.
  • Use Open Body Language: Keep your posture open, make eye contact, and use gestures that feel natural. These signals invite learners to engage with you.
  • Smile and Engage: Smiling releases feel-good endorphins and helps create a friendly, open environment for your learners.
  • Mirror or Video Practice: Practise speaking in front of a mirror or record yourself. Focus on pacing, voice projection, and body language. Watch the playback to identify areas for improvement and strengths.
  • Mini Practice Sessions: Deliver your key points to a friend or colleague. Ask for feedback on clarity, engagement, and pacing.
  • Daily Reflection: After each training session, jot down a few notes on what went well and where you’d like to improve. Over time, you’ll see patterns and areas of growth.
  • Leverage Your Experiences: Your past experiences as a carer or nurse give you a unique perspective—share relevant stories to help bring your material to life.
  • Stay Genuine: Authenticity connects with learners. Speak naturally, focus on clarity over perfection, and allow your personality to shine.
  • Adopt a Growth Mindset: Confidence grows over time. Embrace each training as a learning experience that contributes to your ongoing growth as a trainer.
